TMS Q & A

What is TMS?

TMS is an FDA-approved, pharmaceutical-free therapeutic option for treatment-resistant depression. This innovative and noninvasive treatment uses magnetic fields, similar to those produced during an MRI, to stimulate the nerve cells in your brain.

As your nerve cells activate, your depression symptoms reduce. Acadian Care LLC provides TMS therapy to patients who haven’t found effective relief with antidepressants or experience intolerable side effects.

How does TMS work?

The neurotransmitters and receptors in certain regions of your brain regulate your mood and other aspects of your mental health. Depression symptoms emerge when your neurotransmitters are underactive.

TMS addresses neurotransmitter underactivity by stimulating your nerve cells and receptors with a painless pulse of magnetic energy. As your nerve cells become more active, they produce and release neurotransmitters such as serotonin, which regulate your mood.

Am I a good candidate for TMS?

TMS is often an effective alternative treatment for depression that hasn’t subsided with medication or other therapeutic options. However, you need to meet specific criteria to be eligible for TMS treatment, including:

  • Age 18 or older
  • No history of manic episodes
  • Have tried at least two antidepressants without relief
  • No metal in or above the neck (fillings are usually acceptable)
  • No history of seizures or epilepsy

If you meet these criteria and are struggling with treatment-resistant depression, schedule a consultation at Acadian Care LLC to find out if TMS is right for you.

What should I expect during TMS treatment?

TMS is a series of treatments. You have TMS therapy five days a week for between four and six weeks, depending on your needs and how you respond to the procedure.

Most of your treatments take 20-45 minutes. However, your first appointment lasts longer. Your provider at Acadian Care LLC measures your head and identifies the precise angles required to position the CloudTMS equipment at the correct location on your head.

Your provider programs the settings into the CloudTMS computer so that on future appointments, the machine calibrates its position to your specific measurements.

During your TMS sessions, you sit in a comfortable chair with the CloudTMS coil positioned lightly against your head. You need to stay still throughout your treatment, and you may feel a light tapping feeling or hear clicking sounds.

TMS is entirely painless, and you can return to your work or other regular activities as soon as your treatment is over. TMS doesn’t cause any side effects, and it doesn’t interfere with your alertness or memory. You can even drive yourself to and from your appointment.
