Depression Q & A

What is depression?

Depression is a prevalent mental health condition that causes pervasive and overpowering feelings of sadness and despair. Sorrow and grief are normal and valuable emotions that come and go depending on your life circumstances.

Depression, on the other hand, might be triggered by loss or a devastating life event. However, instead of fading with time, it envelops your life and causes disruptive symptoms that can last for months or even years when left untreated.

Common symptoms of depression include:

  • Feelings of sadness, hopelessness, and guilt
  • Loss of interest in activities you used to enjoy
  • Lost libido
  • Changes in appetite
  • Changes in sleep habits
  • Fatigue
  • Reduced concentration
  • Thoughts of suicide and death

If you’re thinking of self-harm or suicide, call 911 or go to your nearest emergency room for immediate assistance.

What causes depression?

Depression is a complex illness with many contributing factors, ranging from abnormal brain chemistry to life events.

For example, if you have a family history of depression or other mental health conditions, you may have a genetic predisposition to depression as well as exposure to environmental factors.

Additionally, your brain chemistry plays a vital role in mood regulation and depression. If neurotransmitters such as serotonin and dopamine are underactive or unavailable, you’re likely to develop depression or another mood disorder.

A hormonal imbalance can cause irregularities in your brain chemistry and trigger depression. Other factors that contribute to depression include exposure to poverty, neglect, and abuse. If you have a naturally pessimistic outlook on life, you may be more prone to depression.

How is depression treated?

Acadian Care LLC provides customized, multidisciplinary treatment plans to relieve depression. Following your intake assessment which may include GeneSite® genetic testing for depression, your provider works with you to implement a plan to help you feel better.

Your treatment program may include a combination of medication, counseling, and lifestyle modifications.

For example, antidepressants can regulate your brain chemistry and relieve your symptoms. As your symptoms subside, you can focus your energy on exploring and resolving the issues that contribute to your depression in counseling.

If medication and counseling haven’t effectively relieved your depression, Acadian Care LLC offers CloudTMS™  transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS). TMS is a noninvasive, FDA-approved alternative for treatment-resistant depression.
