“An Autism Diagnosis May Be Confused With Other Psychiatric Diagnosis.”

Autism may be a difficult diagnosis to diagnose, and obtaining, and validating a diagnosis is a challenge that Acadian Care would like to help you overcome. Autism can be confused, or complicated by ADHD, OCD, Anxiety, and other psychiatric diagnosis, including the old diagnosis of Asperger’s. Autism testing does definitely help tease this apart. Fortunately, you have several options for Autism testing in the New Orleans area, Mandeville, and Slidell: in addition to Acadian Care (and Dr Aucoin), Children’s Hospital, and Tulane Hospital both offer Autism Diagnosis testing. Testing at any of these facilities will provide you with the same high quality, evidence based test. In fact, both doctor Katie Aucoin, PhD, and Dr Kutner, were trained at Tulane, and are proud of their Tulane heritage.

Many people may not realize that autism testing has been standardized; this meaning that wherever the test is taken, or whoever gives it, the results should (scientifically speaking) be the same.

The Diagnosis Of Autism Is Many Times A Team Approach And Should Be Differentiated From The Previously Used Asperger’s Diagnosis.

Psychologists, and psychiatrists can work together to help. Acadian Care is pleased to announce that we now offer a full assessment of Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD). An initial diagnostic interview and screening process of ASD symptoms allows us to determine if testing is warranted. If warranted, we complete a testing protocol that includes the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule – 2nd Edition (ADOS-2). The ADOS-2 is a semi-structured, standardized assessment of communication, social interaction, play, and restricted and repetitive behaviors, and is viewed as the “gold standard” for the observational assessment of ASD. Our ASD testing protocol also includes a cognitive assessment as well as an evaluation of emotional and behavioral issues so as to achieve the most accurate picture of current symptoms. By completing this evaluation and getting a thorough understanding of your child, we can obtain the information needed to clarify diagnoses and inform treatment planning that best fits your child and his/her needs.

Though Asperger’s is no longer an official diagnosis, Autism testing can help distinguish between the classic diagnosis of Asperger’s (now included into Autism Spectrum Disorder) and more Severe Autism.
