Dyslexia Testing in Mandeville, New Orleans, Slidell

Dyslexia is a type of reading disorder characterized by difficulty with learning to read fluently and with accurate comprehension despite normal intelligence. Dyslexia testing may be useful in determining if dyslexia is present. Dyslexia often co-occurs with other learning disabilities such as dyscalculia (math disorder) and dysgraphia (writing disorder), as well as with Attention-Deficit Disorder (ADHD). A common misconception about dyslexia is that dyslexic readers write words backwards or move letters around when reading, but this only occurs in a very small population of dyslexic readers. Individuals with dyslexia are better identified by reading accuracy, fluency, and writing skills that do not seem to match their level of intelligence.

Reasons for Dyslexia Testing

In early childhood, symptoms that correlate with a later diagnosis of dyslexia include delays in speech, letter reversal or mirror writing, and being easily distracted by background noise. School-age children with dyslexia can have various symptoms, including difficulty identifying or generating rhyming words, difficulty counting syllables in words, difficulty segmenting words into individual sounds or blending sounds to make words, difficulty with word retrieval or naming problems, very poor spelling, and tendencies to omit or add letters or words when writing and reading. Signs persist into adolescence and adulthood with trouble with summarizing a story, memorizing reading aloud, and learning a foreign language.

There is no single assessment measure that can be used for dyslexia testing. A series of tests (or sub-sections of tests) is usually chosen on the basis of their measurement properties and their potential to address referral issues. For dyslexia, special attention is paid to gathering data in areas such as: expressive oral language, expressive written language, receptive oral language, receptive written language, intellectual/cognitive functioning, and educational achievement.
